The History of Alpha Sigma Sigma Chapter
Alpha Chapter 1924
In 1924, Epsilon Chapter was organized in the home of Soror Grace Smith by Soror Homer Woods, making Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority the first greek letter organization in the city of Gary. At its inception, Epsilon Chapter included all members residing in the city of Gary, graduate and undergraduate.
Epsilon played host to the 6th International Boule on December 26-28, 1930, the first boule of the sorority as an incorporated body. The boule was hosted at Roosevelt High School, a school built exclusively for black students in the city during this time.
In 1942, after much reorganizing as mandated by the national body, graduate members were placed into their own chapter that would henceforth be known as Alpha Sigma Sigma chapter, while Epsilon became a chapter for undergraduate members.
Today, Alpha Sigma Sigma, presided by Soror Dharathula T. Harris, continues in the tradition of our motto "Greater Service, Greater Progress".
